Today’s Mypaper has, on its frontpage, an article question why people are donating vehemently to China in aid of the china quake, when it has US 15 trillion in foreign reserves, and has freed up $18 billion for their own quake relief and reconstruction, and even pledged US11million to help the Myanmar Cyclone victims.
Now, by that very same logic, shouldn’t we all not be donating to NKF already, and instead donate to some of the lesser known charities that really need some funds to help the poor, rather than to install platinum or diamond taps?
Why not write a cheque to the auntie collecting paper boxes every morning, or to the auntie who goes around coffee shops selling tissue? Afterall, you bought tissues from her probably because you felt sad for her, and not because you really needed tissues when you have 3 other colleagues all with a fresh packet of tissue in their bags right?
People continue to donate to NKF because they feel an affinity to the charity. Maybe one of their relatives is suffering from kidney failure, and requires the services of NKF.
As long as people give, and show they care, why should anyone question how they want to show their concern. If I feel an affinity towards those suffering from AIDS, i’ll naturally donate more towards a charity or an organisation working towards a cure for it.
As a majority of singaporeans are chinese, we naturally feel closer to those suffering in China. In fact, lots of our ancestors would have come from China, so is it wrong to want to try and help out our fellow chinese, even if they can help themselves?
