The original Ironman thrilled in that we were thrown right into the origin story within the first 5 minutes of the film, and while Ironman 2 doesn't have that same frenetic energy, it makes up for it in pyrotechnics and fun. True to the original, the sequel has kept the slightly offbeat route, taking itself less seriously than other superhero films like Hulk and Spiderman. That's not to say that the plot's all fluffy. Quite the contrary, the sequel explores deeper into the psyche of Tony Stark. What now that everyone knows his secret identity? Will he be loved or hated by the public? The Arc Reactor technology that's keeping shrapnels from reaching his heart, is also killing him by releasing toxins into his bloodstream. Can he find an alternative source of energy to save himself? Who's that new legal chick in Stark Industries? So many questions, only 2 hours to answer them. Not to mention another come-back kid in Mickey Rourke as Whip-lash, who has a very personal score to settle with Tony. A brilliant scientist, Ivan Vanko (Mickey Rourke) managed to replicate the Arc Reactor to fashion his very own costume with 2 electrical whips as his weapon of choice. After wrecking havoc at the Monaco Grand Prix, he gets the attention of Justin Hammer, CEO of Hammer Industries, and one of Stark's competitors in the weapons and technology field. This allows Ivan to get the funding he needs to build an army of drones to battle Ironman. Jon Favreau's certainly amped up the issues in the sequel. Again, the brilliant cast does a wonderful job, especially RDJ, and new addition Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow.
Yeah, wow. I want one.
The only thing I didn't like about the cast was Don Cheadle, who replaced Terrence Howard as Rhodey. I preferred Terrence as he had more charisma, and a more confident demeanor about him. If you enjoyed Ironman, you will like the sequel. and for comic geeks, its especially fun trying to spot all the cheeky references and eastereggs dropped within the movie. Oh, and if you don't already know, stay back after the credits for a short clip!
