Every superhero has a master, a teacher. Luke Skywalker had Yoda, Anakin Skywalker had Qui Gon Jinn. Superstar Bruce Lee’s master was none other than Ip Man.
Ip Man, the movie, tells of his life before and during the Japanese occupation. Being the son of wealthy parents in China in the 1930s meant that he had a lot of time on his hands, and nothing much to do. As such, he learnt and practiced the Wing Chun style of martial arts. Since he didn’t have to bother about making a living, he became pretty good at Wing Chun, and quickly became the number 1 martial arts expert in Fo Shan. Then came the Japanese occupation, during which he lost his fortune to the japanese, and had to find work to support his wife and son. The Japanese soon came to learn of his amazing 20 punches per second specialty move, and wanted him to teach all japanese soldiers that trick, so they could conquer the world sooner and cheaper. But of course, Ip Man refused, which eventually caused the Japs to be defeated and scurrying back to Japan. Some killer moves spotted in the movie, and cheorography was pretty good. But I felt that Ip Man was made to be too powerful, untouchable, such that you don’t really feel for the dude. Its almost like the filmmakers had too much respect for him to not even make him a little vulnerable. But… its a gong fu flick after all, and for that, it gets 3.5 out of 5. |
