Since bursting onto the director/series-creating field with Felicity, Alias and Lost, JJ Abrams has never looked back. Together with Damon Lindelof and producer-director Bryan Burke, partnerships formed on Lost, he has only grown from strength to strength. This is evident in Cloverfield, one of my personal favourites of 2008, and now with Star Trek, he has shown us the magic of movies and storytelling.
Suck on that Shyamalan! And thanks to Omy, I was given a super sneak preview of Star Trek this evening at Great World. Security was tight. recording devices including mobile phones had to be surrendered, otherwise I would have definitely posted Scar Trek – grainy version here for you. But no such luck, so a written review will have to do. Unfamiliar with the original series, as well as the next generation series, I was initially worried that none of it will make sense. Fortunately, the movie started with James T Kirk’s birth, so yes, it kinda works as an origins film, detailing Kirk and Spock’s first encounters aboard the USS Enterprise. Set in the future (don’t worry, Nokia will still be your friendly mobile maker) where space is no longer a mystery, and people travel from Earth to Jupiter in 3 minutes, Kirk and Spock have to pit their brains together to stop an evil Romulan out to destroy planets belonging to the Federation. Space, Aliens, Warp Speed, Spaceships, Blackholes, Space fights and even a dose of humour. Any film that manages to squeeze in all these is a good film. Oh, and it wouldn’t really be a JJ Abrams production without some time-travelling bunnies thrown in for good measure. So yeah, for people with no affiliation with any of the Star Trek history, don’t worry, they made it totally understandable. We probably wouldn’t catch any nods to the original series, but no biggie. Cast is great, although I kept thinking Zachary Quinto will suddenly turn around, break through the 4th wall and zap your brains out, Sylar style! At just over 2 hour run time, the pacing is well done such that you don’t feel to dragged out by the end, in fact, it leaves you wanting more adventures on board the magnificent ship. All said, the movie’s a solid 4.5/5 |
