From the writer and director behind the immensely popular infernal affairs trilogy comes another cop drama, this time infiltrating a trading company suspected of insider trading and share manipulation.
Lau Ching Wan, Daniel Wu and Louis Koo are a team at the Commercial Crimes Bureau. Tasked with monitoring a group of executives suspected of share manipulation, they take the night shift poring through surveilance footage and audio, trying to gather evidence of stock manipulation. When they pick up a piece of information that a particular stock will rise more than five fold the following day, one of them gets greedy, and decides to delete the information, and get into the market for one play. As we all know, one deceit only leads to the next, and so down the rabbit hole we go, as they try to cover one lie over the next. Things get complicated, and before you know it, they are caught in between the Bureau and the crime boss. Tautly written and deftly acted by the 3 leads, i could empathise with them, and sort of understood the path they went down. This production (paired with Transformers 2) clearly shows that effects are not all that makes a good movie. Plot and acting matters too. 4/5 |
