There are few films that reel you in, tug at the tearducts and leave you bawling like a baby. This is one of them. The film (adapted off a novel of the same name by Jodi Picoult) tells of how each member of a family handles dealing with a terminal illness within the family. The patient is Kate, who suffers from Leukemia, diagnosed since she was a toddler. Her mum Sara (a sterling performance from Cameron Diaz), desperate to do anything to save her daughter's life, resorts to in vitro fertilization to grow a test-tube baby who will provide the perfect body parts for Kate as her organs start to fail later in life. The story mostly centres around the time Kate turns 15, when her kidney starts to fail. At the same time, Anna, the test tube sister, seeks to sue her parents for to gain medical emancipation so she wouldn't have to give up a kidney, for if she does, she too, would not be able to live a full, normal life. We proceed to see the family battle it out in court, while split narratives allow us a peek at what each of them is thinking. Anna loves Kate dearly, but she didn't ask to be born as a surrogate. Is it fair then, to expect her to give up basically her life at keeping her sisters? Which mother will not do whatever it takes to save her child's life? To this end, a mother's love, and will to not give up knows no boundaries. But in her neverending pursuit for a cure, and her dogged determination to sustain her daughter's life, is she actually causing more suffering and pain for the rest of her family, Kate included? Kate, at the centre of it all, sees and acknowledges the ripple effects it has had on her entire family. But can she do anything to help her family?
A well casted film, with all of the main characters putting in a great effort. True blue tearjerker. I'm still feeling melancholic. Even now, 2 hours after the movie has ended.
