In a world first, a biologist has created an artificial living cell from scratch. Craig Venter, maverick biologist and billionaire entrepreneur, who nicknamed the cell "Synthia", is facing accusations of tampering with life and "playing God". This move however, sets the stage for future bacterial factories, in which artificial organisms can be created to mop up carbon dioxide, toxic waste, or even as medicines.
But of course, with opportunity comes risk. Remember I am Legend, or Resident Evil, in which bacteria almost wipes out the entire human race, or worse, turns us into manic crazies? Or Splice, the upcoming film starring Adrien Brody, where a bunch of scientists splice human DNA with animal genes.. you don't even have to watch the film to know what happens. Yeap. SHIT happens! So is this the beginning of the end? Read the full article on DailyMail and judge for yourself. I'm gonna get me some firepower and start practising my runs.
