As Singapore heads into its 3rd flood within 2 months (with still no one to blame?), I start to ponder over the behaviors of various parties, and if one party affected the other in this endless cycle of the blame game. The wife posited that the reason the Gahmen is so defensive and overeager to absolve itself of any blame in their history of fuckups is that we, as a nation, are too eager to point the finger at them, and asking "so, who's to blame?" Thinking about that in between bites of Baked Egg Tarts at Imperial Treasure (so that if my thinking is flawed, its because that eggtarts were so damn good), I put forth the idea that the reverse was true; That Gahmen has been so stubbornly refusing to admit to any faults/weaknesses for fear of being ousted, instead pushing the blame onto other factors, that people automatically ask "So, who's to blame now?" in the most apathetic of expressions. I think Singaporeans are not idiots, and we all know that NO ONE (Elites included) can always be 100% correct. Much less the government, being heads of States and having to constantly grapple with tough decisions that will affect the nation, sometimes in ways no one can predict. People screw up, even if they are paid millions a year. We just need you to acknowledge that fact. Take the recent DBS system failure for instance. They took immediate steps to rectify the situation, and the CEO himself came out to issue a statement of apology, followed by an honest explanation of what caused the outage. He seemed honestly sorry about the episode, and we forgave. So Guys, its one thing to bring about prosperity and progress for the nation, its another to be man enough to admit to your mistakes, learn from them and work on a solution. And guess what, its the latter that earns you R.E.S.P.E.C.T. Something you guys sorely lack from this generation. Maybe the authoritarian approach worked in the 1950s when The Father spoke, and The Son obeyed without question. But that was so last millennium.
