Embed quotes from Quora

Jan

I was exploring Quora, and one feature I really like about it, is its ability to easily embed a quote.

For instance, this was one of the answers I offered on the site, regarding bad movies.

Read Quote of Richard Tan’s answer to Movie Business: Why are so many bad films made? on Quora

With an easy highlight of a quote from Quora, you can readily embed it onto other sites, and it will pull that quote in, with a neat looking format surrounding it. Very similar to how you can embed tweets.

Nice.

You can learn the how from here.

Richard Lee McNair – Prison Escape Extraordinaire

Jan
23

We watch the TV series Prison Break and we think to ourselves “WHHHHAAAT. This will never happen in real life!”

It’s true. In real life, its much simpler.

Take Richard Lee McNair.

A convicted murderer in 1987 during a botched robbery, he would later escape from 3 different prisons at 3 different times, using 3 different tactics.

Escape #1

He used lip balm to grease his way out of handcuffs, and ran off.

Escape #2

Crawling out of a ventilation duct.

But this is where it got infinitely more interesting, bringing us to

Escape #3

In his third prison in Louisiana, his duties in prison included working in the mailroom, repairing torn, old mailbags. One day, while he was sorting through the mailbags, he very conveniently hid in one and buried himself within a pallet under some mailbags, and promptly mailed himself out of prison!

The pallet was shrink-wrapped and forklifted into a warehouse just outside the prison fence.

He was free!

Serendipity

Well, not quite. It was right next to the prison, and someone was bound to find out about him being missing sooner or later. So he had to get out of there pronto.

Hours after his escape, he was jogging along a railway track when he came upon Police Officer Carl Bordelon. He had no identification on him, and gave the officer 2 different names each time he was asked, the officer had a call about a missing convict, and yet he managed to convince the officer that he was merely jogging and was in town to help on a roofing project.

Its something we had to see to believe. Luckily for us, there IS video.

I don’t wanna say the officer is stupid (even though he is) because that just takes away all the credit from Richard Lee for being so calm and collected during the entire exchange.

Girl talk makes girls more depressed

Jan
22

Girls like to talk about their issues. Whether its with other girls, or actually, just anyone willing to listen probably.

But a study shows that girls who like to talk through their issues, actually have a higher propensity towards depression and stress.

A possible theory is that as they talk about their issues, the time spent focused on their problems increase, which makes the problem seem worse than they really are, or at the very least, consume a lot more of their time than it should.

This is especially true for problems they can’t control.

Amanda Rose, the associate professor who conducted the study, also suggested that they engage in other activities such as sports, to take their minds off the problem (See, guys have long since figured it out!)

So there, the next time your wife or girlfriend wants to confide in you, RUN, and make her chase after you.

Ethical Charging

Jan

In million-dollar-doctor Susan Lim‘s case, a judge has ruled that a profession needs to have ethical charging, and that any charges should have a just and fair limit.

When do we start asking about ethical charging on COEs and COVs?

Augmented Reality – Car Chase Style

Jan
16

A man was watching a police car chase live on his TV, and decided to film it from his TV screen. Then shit got a lot more real.

What are the odds? Some have come forward to say it was a fake.. but even if it was, its still pretty cool nonetheless.

13 films in 2013

Jan
03

Yup, let’s not waste any time. We’re already way into day 3 of 2013!

So without further ado, its time to look ahead and look at the upcoming slate of films.

These 13 films are some that I’m really looking forward to catch (in no particular order):

1. Django Unchained

Yes, it was released in 2012 in the US, but it will only hit Singapore theatres sometime in March or May, I think? I really enjoyed Inglourious Basterds, and since this one has Christoph Waltz as well, I say bring it!

2. Man of Steel

I never liked Superman as a superhero. Maybe its because his near invincibility just sort of made things boring, and that stakes weren’t as palpably high as with other more vulnerable heroes. In all the portrayals of Lex Luthor, I never got the impression of his genius too. So, bland superhero plus blah (& bald) villain equals ‘meh’.

So what made me wanna watch Man of Steel? The tag-team writing credits of Christopher Nolan and David S Goyer. Yes, the duo who together came up with the story for The Dark Knight trilogy.

I don’t think there’s any more justification required.

3. Iron Man 3

A new director in Shane Black may push some new ideas for the next Iron Man adventure. Plus, we get to see how events in The Avengers may or may not affect events or character development in this film!

So, does the suit make the man or does the man make the suit?

4. Now You See Me

There’s not been a decent film about magic since Chris Nolan’s The Prestige. Although I highly doubt this will surpass The Prestige, the premise is interesting. A group of magicians perform the ultimate heist by robbing a bank on another continent whilst performing on stage.

Now that’s a better trick than The Joker’s!

5. This is the End

The year 2012 had been highly anticipated by some as the year we’ll all end in an epic apocalypse. Well, that didn’t happen. But in This is the End, we can see how a bunch of actors (playing no doubt a highly fictionalised version of themselves) react to the end of the world.

Written and directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, this looks to be a funny one filled with celeb cameos.

6. Kick-Ass 2

Kick-Ass totally kicked ass! It totally blew past all my expectations, and I don’t know what they can do to better that. So, in Hit Girl’s own words, “Okay you cunts… let’s see what you can do now!”

7. World War Z

Despite budget blowouts, delayed production, reshoots, a third act re-write by Damon Lindelof and an ultimately unsatisfying trailer, its still a film about zombies.

8. Pacific Rim

Giant robots vs giant monsters? Here, take my money!

9. Elysium

Remember that awesome movie District 9? This is from the same director!

10. The World’s End

The last of the “Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy”,  after Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, who can resist Simon Pegg’s loser charm?

11. Thor: The Dark World

Like Iron Man 3, it’ll be interesting to see what Thor gets up to, post Avengers.

12. Star Trek Into Darkness

JJ Abrams has to be credited for single-handedly revitalising the Trek franchise, and for winning over new fans (like myself).

13. The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

The Hobbit: The Unexpected Journey, was mostly unnecessary, but beautiful. The 2nd part, as its name suggests, should make for a much more exciting journey.

So there, my 13 films to watch this year. Any of these intrigue you? If you have any other films, do share in the comments.
