RED 2

RED 2 Poster

RED 2 is really fun.

If you’ve seen RED, you’ll need no introduction to the main cast of Bruce Willis, John Malkovich and Helen Mirren as former black ops agents disrupted out of retirement in the last installment for a lesson on how being older doesn’t necessarily make you less of a badass.

Think The Expendables, but funny. And good.

In RED 2, we waste no time on introductions and within 8 minutes of run time, we’d have witnessed an explosion, a funeral, an interrogation and the decimation of a crack team of CIA agents. In a fun and light-hearted way of course.

The sequel adds Anthony Hopkins, Catherine Zeta Jones and Korean eye candy Lee Byung Hun on top of the main cast, and piles on the action. Although entertaining, it does feel a little too long at times as they team travel the world in search of a new, portable nuclear bomb capable of escaping detection while under fire from all directions by all sorts of frenemies.

It’s one of those films where you’d imagine the cast having a ball of a time together, fooling around, having fun, then collecting their paycheques, like I imagine the Oceans franchise to be.

Bastards.

Pacific Rim

Pacific Rim Poster

Way before you step into the movie theatre for a screening of Pacific Rim, you’d already be expecting a massive, action packed film filled with as much testosterone as one can fill, with a synopsis that reads “humans build giant robots to fight giant monsters to the death as a last resort to defend humanity”.

But just in case you had any semblance of hope that there might be some level of plot or intelligent discourse as to the origins of the giants, all you had to do was look at who plays the scientist, and you’ll know, nope.

Yeah, when Charlie Day is the resident scientist in any film, all plot goes out the window.

But if you’re here to watch giant robots fight giant monsters to the death, wow. You’re not going to be disappointed. The robots are shiny, the monsters are ferocious.

Kaiju Sydney

Aaargh! Kaiju of the Opera!!

An interdimensional portal opens up under the sea floor in the Pacific, and from the portal enters enormous monsters (named ‘Kaiju’) who surface and lay waste to cities such as Japan, US, Hong Kong and Australia. As their appearances increase in frequency, humanity bands together and builds giant robots called Jaegers to fight the Kaijus.

As the Jaegers are starting to prove inefficient under increasing attacks and the Kaijus’ adaptations to their fighting style, the Jaeger program, headed by Stacker Pentecost, decide to use their remaining Jaegers in a last ditch attempt to use a nuclear device to blast and seal the portal.

In the meantime, scientists are trying to study the remains of the monsters in a bid to understand them, and find a way to defeat them once and for all. Will the plan work? What will the scientists find? Do you really care? All you want are great fight scenes between Jaegers and Kaijus, and that you’ll get plenty.

Pacific Rim

face obscured by shadow. Still a better actor than you.

Unfortunately, the film is let down by the mainly C cast of actors, who really jolt me out of the movie experience everytime they try to emote. It’s especially sad, when among the cast, the best actress is little girl Mana Ashida, who plays young Mako Mori.

The “Tonight, we are cancelling the apocalypse” sounds good in the trailer, but when you listen to the entire speech, it’s out-of-this-world lame.

After going through 2 seasons of Survivor, and coming up tops the second time round, you’d think that with a cool million dollars (pre-tax) in his pocket, John Cochran would take a well deserved break before thinking about his next adventure.

But no, the Harvard king of nerds jumped right back to work, announcing that he was going to be a writing for the TV sitcom The Millers.

Here’s his tweet announcing the gig.

The Millers premieres September 26, 2013 on CBS.

The George Zimmerman Case

Jul
19

The fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman took place on the night of February 26, 2012 in Florida. Martin was a 17 year old African American. Zimmerman was a 28 year old mixed race Hispanic.

The trial for 2nd degree murder and manslaughter began June 10, 2013, and on July 13, 2013, Zimmerman was found not guilty of both charges.

For those of you who didn’t follow the case, let’s back up a little and get more background into this case:

At the time of the incident, Zimmerman was living in The Retreat at Twin Lakes in Sanford, Florida. Trayvon was visiting and staying with his father’s fiancee, also living in The Retreat. In the 18 months prior to the shooting, Zimmerman had called the police 7 times, reporting suspicious men in the area. There had also been plenty of burglaries, thefts and 1 shooting in the area in the year before the shooting, creating an extremely tense environment within the community.

In September 2011, Twin Lake residents created a neighbourhood watch, and appointed Zimmerman to be the coordinator. He’d been licensed to carry firearms since 2009.

February 26, 2012

On the day of the shooting, Zimmerman had observed Trayvon wandering around the community, and called the Sanford Police. “We’ve had some breakins in the neighbourhood, and there’s a real suspicious guy”, he’d said.

2 minutes into the call, Zimmerman said “He’s running.” Police then heard a car door chime, and asked if Zimmerman was on pursuit. Zimmerman replied in the positive, and the police told him “We don’t need you to do that.” He replied “OK”, and told the police to call him when they arrive, so he could provide his location.

He ended the call at 7.15pm. When police arrived at the scene at 7.17pm, there’d already been what looked to be a struggle between Zimmerman and Trayvon, and Trayvon had been fatally shot in the chest.

We are all Trayvon Martin

Witness accounts

Witness accounts of the incident were contradicting, with some saying that Trayvon was straddling Zimmerman and punching him, while others told of the opposite. Some of the calls recorded background screams of “help”, which could not be positively identified to belong to either Trayvon or Zimmerman.

Racial Profiling

Zimmerman was accused of having racially profiled Trayvor Martin, and assumed he was up to no good because he was black.

Not Guilty

At the end of the day, the jury handed over a verdict of Not Guilty to 2nd degree murder and manslaughter as the prosecution did not surface enough evidence to prove beyond any reasonable doubt that Zimmerman did not act in self-defense.

Do you think there’s something wrong in the Florida justice system, when a man is allowed to carry arms, follow an unarmed teenager against the advice of police, admit that he’d shot and killed him, and acquitted with a self-defense plea?

John Oliver at The Daily Show certainly thought so.

Paypal accidentally credits $92 quadrillion to a man

Jul

Imagine receiving a paypal statement saying that your balance reads: $92,233,720,368,547,800.

That was what happened to Chris Reynolds, 56. This made him, temporarily, the richest man in the world by far, 100 times more than the current richest man, Carlos Slim, who only has $73 billion. Pffft.

Check your paypal statements, everyone!

Plants vs Zombies 2: Its about Time

Jul
17

For those of you waiting to get your hands on the long awaited sequel to the popular game Plants vs Zombies, well, you have to wait a little longer.

Worldwide release has been delayed while Popcap makes their final round of testing to ensure cross platform compatibility. Originally scheduled for a July 18 release, it has now been pushed back to “later this summer”

They have, however, released the game in Australia and New Zealand as part of a controlled rollout to fix any bugs they encounter.

Plants vs Zombies 2

Early reviews have praised the game as bringing it to a new level, while keeping the strategy portion intact for fans of the first. This round, there are 3 worlds for us to kill zombies, as opposed to Crazy Dave’s backyard in the first.

There’s the Wild West, Ancient Egypt and Pirate worlds to conquer. Each of the 3 worlds will feature zombies unique to each location.

Sounds like they’ve put a ton of effort into this one, can’t wait! The game will be free-to-play, with in-app purchases available for additional power-ups.

Singapore’s first official online remainder bookstore

Jul

The feeling of rifling through a book over a hot steaming cup of coffee trumps swiping over an ebook anyday. I remember reading voraciously when I was much younger, and tearing through The Three Investigator series, and then later on hooked on books by Christopher Pike.

Yeah, mystery and horror books were pretty much my staple.

As I got older, I started reading less fiction. I think it’s the peer pressure of trying to look somewhat intellectual while on the train. You’d be better judged carrying ‘Freakonomics’ than ’50 Shades of Grey’, but then again, I see plenty of that too.

I think the habit of reading needs to be cultivated from a young age, but then again, the high cost of living in Singapore means the necessities likes clothes, milk, food always comes first. Books for children, which can get rather expensive, ranks pretty far below, especially for toddlers.

The Groovy Giraffe

That’s where The Groovy Giraffe comes in. The Groovy Giraffe is a Singapore based online remainder bookstore. They source overprinted and unsold books from publishers, who sell it to them at bargain prices, and in turn, they pass over the discounts to consumers.

Are you a Cow?

It depends on whether you like beef.

For example, the deeply philosophical and existential book called “Are you a Cow?” typically retailing for $9.25 is now $4.90 at Groovy Giraffe.

For the adults, “Steve Jobs” is retailing for $14.90 instead of the usual $30.

I had a chat with the owners of The Groovy Giraffe, Kheng Hoe and Pearlin, and they shared their perspective on why they decided to do this.

First of all, why the name Groovy Giraffe?

We had a long discussion on this actually. We wanted a unique name that is cool and will appeal to people of all ages. Giraffe being the tallest animal can also spot a bargain from far away!

(If you’re not convinced about the Giraffe’s appeal, here’s a picture of a giraffe taking a nap.)

Napping Giraffe

Awww!

What are some of your favourite books?

My favorite books are mainly from the self help category. I love the books by Mitch Albom (Tuesdays with Morrie, Have a little faith) and Malcolm Gladwell (Outliers, Tipping Point)

While Pearlin’s favorite books are cookbooks as she enjoys cooking. She loves the recipe books of Gordon Ramsay and Nigella Lawson. She is also a big fan of picture books with a huge collection at home.

What made you want to do this?

Being new parents, we realised that books in Singapore, especially children’s books, were extremely costly. We didn’t like this, hence started The Groovy Giraffe with the dream of helping readers save on good books.

The books are all brand new, save for remainder markings or some shelf wear.

So, book readers and bargain hunters, remember this url: http://www.thegroovygiraffe.com/

They are also on Twitter and Facebook, so go show your support, and get great discounts off your favourite books!

Oh, and to celebrate their 1-month opening, from 12 July (today!) to 22nd July, all featured books at $9.90!

Moto X

Jul
11

In May of 2012, Google acquired Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion. This gave Google an official entry into the hardware play and puts them in direct competition with Apple.

Their first showing post acquisition? The mysterious Moto X.

Rumoured to launch in either September or October 2013, they’ve recently started a sign-up page to register interest in a phone nobody’s even seen yet.

Based on the rumour mill, it seems like the phone’s hardware will be mid-end, but topped up with a bunch of interesting software features. Below are some of the specs and features speculated, together with a leaked picture of how the phone may look.

Motorola-X-Phone

Source: Tinthe

  • Of course, being a company of Google, we can probably expect the phone to have the native android experience, devoid of carrier bloat and layered UI like HTC Sense or Samsung’s Touchwiz.
  • One of its first selling points is the ability to customise the phone with 12 colourful back panels.
  • It may ship with the new Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie
  • Display size will be between 4.7″ to 5.0″, with a 720p resolution.
  • Use of Sapphire Glass, which is purportedly 3 X stronger than Gorilla Glass.
  • 1.7GHz Quad Core Processor, with 2GB RAM and 32GB onboard storage.
  • 10MP back facing and 2MP front facing cameras.

Also, it seems that Google is prepared to spend up to $500 million to market the Moto X.

What do you think? Yay or Nay?
