Ethical Charging

Jan

In million-dollar-doctor Susan Lim‘s case, a judge has ruled that a profession needs to have ethical charging, and that any charges should have a just and fair limit.

When do we start asking about ethical charging on COEs and COVs?

Augmented Reality – Car Chase Style

Jan

A man was watching a police car chase live on his TV, and decided to film it from his TV screen. Then shit got a lot more real.

What are the odds? Some have come forward to say it was a fake.. but even if it was, its still pretty cool nonetheless.

13 films in 2013

Jan
03

Yup, let’s not waste any time. We’re already way into day 3 of 2013!

So without further ado, its time to look ahead and look at the upcoming slate of films.

These 13 films are some that I’m really looking forward to catch (in no particular order):

1. Django Unchained

Yes, it was released in 2012 in the US, but it will only hit Singapore theatres sometime in March or May, I think? I really enjoyed Inglourious Basterds, and since this one has Christoph Waltz as well, I say bring it!

2. Man of Steel

I never liked Superman as a superhero. Maybe its because his near invincibility just sort of made things boring, and that stakes weren’t as palpably high as with other more vulnerable heroes. In all the portrayals of Lex Luthor, I never got the impression of his genius too. So, bland superhero plus blah (& bald) villain equals ‘meh’.

So what made me wanna watch Man of Steel? The tag-team writing credits of Christopher Nolan and David S Goyer. Yes, the duo who together came up with the story for The Dark Knight trilogy.

I don’t think there’s any more justification required.

3. Iron Man 3

A new director in Shane Black may push some new ideas for the next Iron Man adventure. Plus, we get to see how events in The Avengers may or may not affect events or character development in this film!

So, does the suit make the man or does the man make the suit?

4. Now You See Me

There’s not been a decent film about magic since Chris Nolan’s The Prestige. Although I highly doubt this will surpass The Prestige, the premise is interesting. A group of magicians perform the ultimate heist by robbing a bank on another continent whilst performing on stage.

Now that’s a better trick than The Joker’s!

5. This is the End

The year 2012 had been highly anticipated by some as the year we’ll all end in an epic apocalypse. Well, that didn’t happen. But in This is the End, we can see how a bunch of actors (playing no doubt a highly fictionalised version of themselves) react to the end of the world.

Written and directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, this looks to be a funny one filled with celeb cameos.

6. Kick-Ass 2

Kick-Ass totally kicked ass! It totally blew past all my expectations, and I don’t know what they can do to better that. So, in Hit Girl’s own words, “Okay you cunts… let’s see what you can do now!”

7. World War Z

Despite budget blowouts, delayed production, reshoots, a third act re-write by Damon Lindelof and an ultimately unsatisfying trailer, its still a film about zombies.

8. Pacific Rim

Giant robots vs giant monsters? Here, take my money!

9. Elysium

Remember that awesome movie District 9? This is from the same director!

10. The World’s End

The last of the “Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy”,  after Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, who can resist Simon Pegg’s loser charm?

11. Thor: The Dark World

Like Iron Man 3, it’ll be interesting to see what Thor gets up to, post Avengers.

12. Star Trek Into Darkness

JJ Abrams has to be credited for single-handedly revitalising the Trek franchise, and for winning over new fans (like myself).

13. The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

The Hobbit: The Unexpected Journey, was mostly unnecessary, but beautiful. The 2nd part, as its name suggests, should make for a much more exciting journey.

So there, my 13 films to watch this year. Any of these intrigue you? If you have any other films, do share in the comments.

Top 10 films in 2012

Dec
31

So, the world didn’t end on the 21st, and we live through yet another apocalyptic prediction.

And with that, I guess we can safely say we’ll be sticking around for Iron Man 3, Star Trek Into Darkness and more. But that’s for another post.

Today, its about the best films of 2012 that I’ve seen. Please fill in yours in the comments.

10. Looper

2 things never fail to get my attention. Zombies, and time travel. Throw in a convoluted mafia-controlled time machine where people from the future send victims into the past to be assassinated, and we’re good.

9. Life of Pi

A boy named Pi, a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker, and 227 days on a lifeboat. The resulting story is an amazing journey filled with incredible visual mastery by Director Ang Lee.

8. Prometheus

A female figure in silhouette stands before an enormous statue of a humanoid head. Text at the middle of the poster reveals the tagline "The Search For Our Beginning Could Lead To Our End". Text at the bottom of the poster reveals the title, production credits and rating.

Ridley Scott. Aliens. Engineers. Damon Lindelof. Black Goo. Awesome.

7. [REC]³

REC3 sets the stage for REC4: Apocalipsis, the final entry in the series. It also, for the first time, brings us out of the apartment building of REC1 and 2. A parallel sequel that takes place at a wedding, which as you can see from the poster, seems to be a lot more happening than most other weddings I’ve seen!

6. Argo

Ben Affleck is a much better director than actor, although, when he acts in his own films, he does bring the acting up a notch as well. A rescue mission in Iran required a CIA agent to pose as a movie producer, and convince militants that 6 escaped US embassy staff in hiding are actually part of a Canadian film crew location scouting for their sci-fi film, Argo.

True story.

5. Magic Mike

Another sorta true story. This time based on Channing Tatum’s early exploits as a teen stripper. Only he’s too old to play his younger self, so he’s now a mentor figure to himself, played by Alex Pettyfer.

Never thought I’d like a movie about male strippers so much. Ooooh! 3 more words. Olivia Munn’s Boobs.

4. The Dark Knight Rises

It was always going to be an uphill task to better The Dark Knight, especially after that performance Heath Ledger put in as The Joker. And Christopher Nolan nearly succeeded with TDKR. I say almost because I feel that TDK is still the best among the 3 films. But TDKR comes pretty close!

3. The Avengers

How do you not love the superhero team-up we’ve all been waiting for? Between Avengers and TDKR, I really can’t tell which had more pre-release buzz around it.

Especially when you think back to 2008, when it was first teased with the end credits scene tagged to the back of Iron Man. With the Avengers, Joss Whedon has upgraded his status in my books as a director whom I’ll watch anything he releases, next to JJ Abrams and Christopher Nolan.

2. Chronicle

Wow. I have no words to describe this film. Chronicle is 2012’s District 9. Both were filmed on a shoestring budget with mind-blowing effects achieved.

Both were done by first time feature directors.

Both stories went in astounding directions that took moviegoers to a special place; the land of unpredictability.

1. The Cabin in the Woods

2012 must definitely be the year of Joss Whedon. Although he wrote this film in 2008, and produced it in 2009, it was only released in 2012. And what a film this is. Its a monster movie, its a comedy, its satire, its a love letter to the horror genre. It is so many things, and then some.

This is a film I’ll definitely be watching over and over again.

Should you run or walk in the rain to get less wet?

Dec

run or walk in rain?

Correct Answer: You don’t run or walk in the rain. You pose.

Its December in Singapore. And for us, that means presents, turkey, and a shitload of rain.

Yeap, we’re well into the rainy season now, and inevitably, you’ll run into instances where you get caught in the rain.

Now, you’ll be thinking: Should I run or walk? Do I get wetter running or simply staying at my walking pace?

You may argue the case both, no, three ways:

  1. If I walk, i don’t get as much rain slamming into the side of me, making me more wet on my front. Hence, I should walk normally.
  2. If I run, I get to shelter faster, so I should be less wet.
  3. What?? There’s no difference! Wet is wet!

Luckily, math and science has the answer:

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Not content with grossing 2.92 billion with the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Peter Jackson is luring us back to Middle-Earth with yet another 3 films, adapted off the prequel The Hobbit.

This time, we follow the adventures of Frodo’s uncle, Bilbo Baggins, as he joins a band of dwarves together with Gandalf to reclaim Lonely Mountain and its treasures. Lonely Mountain had once been the home of the dwarves, until the dragon Smaug, drawn by the vast amount of gold accumulated in the caves, drove them away and settled right in.

If you’re wondering how Peter Jackson plans to expand a novel into 3 feature length films (An Unexpected Journey has a runtime of 170 minutes!), the answer is simple: Drraaaaaaaag it out.

Don’t take my word for it, ask my wife. She actually dozed off during the 1st third of the film. That’s how slow it was. But once the momentum started building, it was pretty enjoyable. Visuals are top notch as we’ve come to expect from a film of that magnitude.

Story wise, its a much more intimate tale of redemption and a more personal journey for the dwarves than it was for the fellowship. And I never thought i’d say this, but, the dwarves looked pretty cool and erm.. even suave (I’m referring of course, to Thorin, the dwarve King).

All in, an enjoyable teaser to the rest of the adventure.

Would have been better had it been shorter and paced tighter.

Rating: 7/10

Cutest thing you’ll see today – Slow Loris

Dec
18

This is a video of a Slow Loris eating a rice ball. It is quite possibly the cutest thing you’ll ever see in 2012 or when the world ends (whichever comes first).

That said, however cute you may find this video, know that the Slow Loris is in danger of going extinct. And the biggest contributing factor is the exotic pet trade.

Slow Lorises routinely have their teeth pulled out or cut before being sold as pets, and many of them die of blood loss, infection or poor nutrition.

So kids, if you want them to live, don’t live with them.

Awww.. those eyes!
